Episode 23: Rise Peacock

October 6, 2017

We've only got a few episodes left until we end our first run here and this episode is a special one. The founder and chief commander of Kitchen Table Gallery sits down with the passionate and talented gallery friend Rise Peacock! Fresh out of grad school from the Tyler School of Art, Rise is already on the move. You can check out her show tonight at Da Vinici Art Alliance http://www.davinciartalliance.org/- a #FirstFriday opening starting at 6pm. The title of the show is Periphery, showing the work of more than 10 artists:

"Whether they are questioning the inclusivity of their material history or denying particular means of production that are favored by their material community, these artists seek to examine what it means to be a maker both inside a community while producing outside of its traditions"

Go and see the opening tonight! 704 Catharine Street Philadelphia PA 19147

Philly Stewards at the 5th Annual Philly Podfest

August 4, 2017

Happy First Friday art people! In this episode of KTG Talks the Philly Stewards sit down with me for a live recording at Philly Podfest no. 5. Kitchen Table Gallery was very pleased to be one of the venues for this year's Philly Podfest. We hosted a bunch of great shows you can find out more about on our Instagram.

The Philly Stewards (www.phillystewards.art) is an educational organization at the beginning of their journey to promote and foster support for the Philly art scene and the artists creating work in our great city. Founding members Alex Conner (alex-conner.com) and Leigh Werrell (virginialeighwerrell.weebly.com) sit down with me to discuss their vision for the Philly Stewards and their thoughts on the art scene in our rapidly growing city. It's no secret that Philadelphia is going through an incredible cultural and economic shift, and these forces impact all areas of life in Philly. My guests discuss how their organization fits into the Philadelphia art scene, art collecting tips for the rest of us, and how their passion for art in Philly motivated them to create Philly Stewards.

A quick thank you to David Steele of http://steeleempire.com for recording and editing this episode. Also we'd like to thank all of the volunteers and Teagan Karuna (http://www.teagank.com/about/) for keeping the Podcast Festival going and helping us with all of the shows at Kitchen Table Gallery this year.

Episode 22: Conrad Benner

July 27, 2017

This episode of KTG Talks is a long time coming! Conrad Benner is a Philly kid who fell in love with street art at a very young age and has been documenting the incredible street art and graffiti Philly has to offer on his blog, Streets Dept (https://streetsdept.com). But Conrad isn't limited to art documentation, his blog is a "purpose driven" one and his belief that art can motivate and effect social and political change is obvious. That's enough from me though, you can listen to the episode! My conversation with Conrad was recorded a while back but his thoughts on politics, art, and Philadelphia we found important to hear. So here it is!

One note: Conrad was a total pro during this interview. I got a new dog who loved Conrad and couldn't stop telling everyone, plus the wood shop was in full gear.

Don't miss one of Conrad's tours: https://streetsdept.com/tours/

Thank you Louise ORourke (Producer) for all her hard work.

Episode 20: Ryan McCartney & Tim Belknap

April 22, 2017

The Icebox Boys! It's finally here! Back in July last year the co-directors of the Icebox Project Space, Ryan McCartney & Tim Belknap, were generous enough to take time out of their busy schedule and sit down with me for an interview. It was a lot of fun, and one of my first interviews. It took a bit of time to get here but the episode is in.

I don't usually bring up the timing of an interview but we get into a couple current cultural things happening in the country around July of last year. I link to one of those events below. Another link, an interview in Title Magazine with the guys (Title Magazine is back now so go check them out) I reference when asking Ryan and Tim about their thoughts on the Barnes Foundation. Yup, we get into the Barnes. If you're interested in curating shows, well, we get into that too. Tim and Ryan shared their thoughts on the Philly art scene, their biggest curating flop, thoughts on the potential of burgeoning art scenes, and bit more including AI.

Episode 18: Stacy Elaine Dacheux

February 11, 2017

My guest for this episode of KTG Talks is visual artist and writer Stacy Elaine Dacheux. I've been friends with Stacy for a long time, all the way back to our days at the Jack Kerouac School at Naropa University. Since I met Stacy back in Boulder, I've had the good fortune of seeing her evolve as an artist. If it's painting, drawing, interviews, art criticism, short fiction, screenwriting, or coaching others to improve their writing - she always has a project or two exploring a new creative curiosity.

The links listed below will lead you to her work old and new. Sometimes Stacy is working on a personal vision she has for a project or she's collaborating with other creators. Her latest work, one that showed at Kitchen Table Gallery last year, is the short film Back to Abstraction. Stacy wrote and starred in the film and Matthew Quezada directed. This film later premiered back in LA at I PRESENT TWO: BACK TO ABSTRACTION Tuesday, January 17th:

"Join Shauna McGarry and Stacy Elaine Dacheux for the premiere night of a new film series! A local artist/filmmaker shows a new piece and presents two other works by artist/filmmakers that must be seen! Then, in the next month, one of those artists will present two other works and so on and so on. Our first featured filmmaker and curator, Stacy Elaine Dacheux, will screen her film, BACK TO ABSTRACTION, then present THE BAD HALF by Duncan Birmingham (IFC’s Maron, Sundance) and WE THE MASSES by Robyn O’Neil (Herzog’s Rogue Film School, Whitney Biennial). Conversations with filmmakers to follow. “I Present Two” hopes to start a wonderful and ongoing conversation between the film center, the artists we admire, and our community." Then the film showed at El Cid's Short Film Night on Feb. 7th.

One thing I love about Stacy's approach to making art is that collaboration is a creative force which inspires her. In the time that I've known her, she has discarded the tired archetype of the solitary, self-destructive artist. Her work is unique, and her desire to collaborate comes from a joyful place. Enough from me! There's a small library of links to her work below and listen to the episode!

Episode 17: Jody McGrath

January 4, 2017

Happy New Year - KTG Talks is back with our first episode of 2017 and we're going international again (kind of). This episode is my conversation with Jody McGrath, an Irish painter all the way from Armagh, Northern Ireland.

We talk about Jody's journey to America, his time spent on the east coast, and where he's heading next. We also discuss Jody's journey as an artist. How has his art evolved from his early studies at the University of Ulster in Belfast to the work he's creating now? We get into his early life in Northern Ireland, and the political strife he witnessed. Jody breaks down his approach to painting and how he learned to channel his emotional experiences into his work.

Episode 16: Ana Vizscarra Rankin

December 10, 2016

I had the chance to sit down with Ana as she was finishing up co-curating FALOLO4EVER at the Little Berlin Annex here in Philadelphia. From the Little Berlin home page:

"All artists included in this exhibition attended TrueQué Residency 2016 http://www.trueque.work/. TrueQue is a residence for emerging artists, activists and cultural managers whose practice reflects on being latin American inside and outside Ecuador. TrueQue seeks to create a space or creative exploration where research, networking and cross-disciplinary practices become an integral part of the process of creating art."

The work in Falolo 4Ever challenged traditional and accepted cultural norms as they pertain to race, gender, language, cultural boundaries, post-colonialism, and much more.

Ana talks with me about this show and the residency she attended. We discuss the artists' work hanging in the Annex as we walk around the gallery.

Later in the episode we also talk about Ana's work, and she's been very busy early on in December. Last week her solo exhibition, Sky Skin, opened at James Oliver Gallery in Philadelphia. This week more of her work appears at the experimental non-profit gallery Liliput, in Puebla, Mexico. Both solo shows, and both exhibitions focus on work Ana discusses in this episode.

Liliput gallery is a non-profit experimental gallery located in Puebla, Mexico. They're always looking for residents and its a chance to take your work international. Give their site a look. All links are in the show notes below.

Episode 15: Kasey Toomey

December 10, 2016

In this episode of KTG Talks I sit down with Kasey Toomey. Currently living in the Philly area and attending graduate school at UPenn, Kasey's work intersects design, landscape architecture, sculpture, art, and any materials he finds compelling enough to create his work. There's no denying that as humans we try to shape and form just about everything around us from our lawns to natural treasures we turn into national parks. Kasey explores how form and object meets space and how that interacts with the human experiencing the work.

But don't take my word for it! Go see Kasey's show today at Tiger Strikes Asteroid. A network of galleries across the globe, TSA's Philly location is 319A N 11th St #2h, and the opening reception is Dec. 10th 2-5pm running until Jan. 21st.

Episode 14: Jena Seiler

November 13, 2016

We recorded this episode before Nov. 8th, 2016. KTG Talks is working on an episode that will address to the recent decision Americans made which resulted in a new president-elect. Keep an eye out.

But this is Jena's episode and so without further delay, please check out my conversation with Jena Seiler. Jena is a doctoral candidate at Ohio University - Athens and in this episode we get into how she thinks about art and lives in the two worlds of making art and writing about it as an academic. It's a good one.
