Episode 9 pt. 1 - Jaime Alvarez

June 28, 2016

It's another 2 parter! In episode 9 Jaime Alvarez talks with me about his journey as an artist and the influences that shape one's path. Space voyage inspiring art, Foucault & grad school, turning a critical eye toward social institutions such as modern schools, defining yourself as an artist, developing as a photographer - my interview with Jaime Alvarez covered more than I expected.

As Jaime has been on his journey as an artist he's kept his sense of humor intact. His enthusiasm for creating new work and appreciation of fellow artists comes through in our conversation. If it's shots of empty hallways in a school, photography of rocks given to him by a friend, or commercial work documenting other artists' exhibits - Jaime is consistently attempting to connect with the viewer.

Episode 8 - Danielle Wyckoff

June 20, 2016

This is a special episode of KTG Talks featuring Kitchen Table Gallery's very own Louise ORourke interviewing Danielle Wyckoff. Danielle talks with Louise about artistic growth, creative influences, forming artistic identity, what it means to make artistic goals, and a few other things they love. If I may say so myself, Danielle's art show at the gallery was a smashing hit!

Episode 7 - Eli Blasko & Trevor King

June 2, 2016

Listening to two people dig deeper into what they love is one of my favorite things! And it doesn't get any better than two friends and collaborators, Trevor & Eli, talking about their art tour, mapping out shows for gallery spaces, and discussing each other's art. This is a live one here, broadcasted from the Kitchen Table Gallery by way of the Mixlr app. If you'd like to follow us on Mixlr for updates on our next live show follow us here: http://mixlr.com/ktg-talks/.

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers past, present, and future! My conversation with Christina continues in Part 2. In this part of our conversation we chat about witnessing the past, we dive deeper into her Rair residency, nostalgia & family history, and the power of objects to invoke memories and connection.

Here are some links to the places mentioned during our talk:

Rair - a nonprofit organization that builds awareness about sustainability issues through art and design. (Taken from their site.)

Philadelphia Sculpture Gym - PSG gallery, which is dedicated to showcasing sculpture in all of its many forms, features monthly exhibitions and provides exhibition opportunities for both emerging and established artists. (Taken from their site.)

Episode 6 - MINKA

April 29, 2016

The guys in MINKA sit down with me to chat about MINKA history, their creative process, touring, getting heard, and the special ingredient to their now famous MINKA stew! Just kidding. I don't think there's a MINKA stew, but I'm sure Ari would make one for the fans if they asked. I had a lot of fun talking with the guys before their Valentine's Day show. Speaking of shows, this episode comes with a special MINKA announcement!

Episode 5 Pt. 1 - Christina P. Day

April 25, 2016

Hey Everyone! Thanks for not forgetting about us during our hiatus. We had a busy month and we’ve got a bunch of episodes coming up. Today we’ve got part 1 of my interview with Christina P. Day.

I felt my chat with her was more of a learning experience, or a class, in how to live like an artist. In talking with her it became apparent that she's done a lot of self-reflection about her identity as an artist and the work she creates. We talk about the definition of Crafts, differences between Art and Design, encouraging young artists, how grad school shapes an artist's growth, and much more. There was so much more we broke it up into two parts!

*** Christina P. Day: Dead Ringers ending April 29th at Philadelphia Sculpture Gym ***

The gallery is only one part of PSG. Here's the other part: The Philadelphia Sculpture Gym is a community studio that operates like a gym membership. A monthly membership grants members access to a wood shop, metal shop, small metals shop, forging area, and a mold making and casting area. We offer classes in various processes from welding and woodworking...and everything in between! (Also taken from their site.)

Episode 4 Pt. 2 - Rebecca O'Leary

March 26, 2016

This episode is my first meeting with Rebecca O'Leary. When I contacted Rebecca for an interview my plan was to ask her about the world of Art Advisory. But sometimes you just have to hit record and go with it. Hearing Rebecca's personal story compelled me to let the recorder run. Oral history, Philly stories, Art, and making it all work is Part 2 of episode 4.
